How Deep Should Mulch Be?

Target 2–3 inches of mulch for most beds. Any shallower and weeds break through within weeks. Push it too deep against tree trunks and you risk bark rot. When we test these depths on commercial landscaping jobs, a strict 3-inch barrier prevents most seasonal weeds. Practical depth targets below, plus how to turn bed area into exact bag counts or bulk yards.

Steps

  1. Pick a depth for your goal2–3 in for decorative beds; 3–4 in for stronger weed barrier around shrubs.
  2. Measure bed areaLength × width for rectangles; π × r² for circles. Split irregular beds into rectangles.
  3. Calculate volumeArea (ft²) × depth (ft) = ft³. Divide by 2 for 2 ft³ bags, or by 27 for bulk yards.

Depth guidelines by use

Decorative refresh on established beds: 2 inches on top of existing mulch after fluffing or removing compacted layers.

New beds and weed suppression: 3 inches after settling is the most cited landscaper recommendation. Fine shredded mulch compacts more than bark nuggets — if you use nuggets, err toward 3–4 inches.

Around trees and shrubs: keep mulch in a donut shape, not a volcano piled against the trunk. Effective depth 2–3 inches at the drip line, pulled back 3–4 inches from bark.

Volume math

Volume (ft³) = bed area (ft²) × depth (in) ÷ 12. Standard retail bags in the US are often 2 ft³. Bulk mulch is sold by the cubic yard (27 ft³).

Example: a 20 ft × 5 ft bed at 3 in depth → 100 ft² × 3 ÷ 12 = 25 ft³. That is 13 two-cubic-foot bags (round up) or about 0.93 bulk yards.

Irregular beds

Split curved or L-shaped beds into rectangles and circles, sum the areas, then apply one depth. It is better to overestimate slightly than to short yourself on delivery day.

Bags vs bulk delivery

Bagged mulch is easier for small jobs and tight access. Bulk yards make sense above roughly 2–3 yd³ when a truck can reach your pile location. Compare unit cost — bulk is often cheaper per cubic foot but may have a minimum delivery fee.

Our mulch calculator outputs both so you can compare before calling your nursery.

Annual maintenance

Mulch breaks down and compacts. Plan to top-dress 1–2 inches each spring rather than remeasuring from zero. If old mulch is more than 4 inches total, scrape some away before adding fresh material.

Frequently asked questions

Can mulch be too deep?
Yes — more than 4 in against tree trunks can cause rot. Pull mulch back a few inches from trunks.
How much does a yard of mulch cover?
Rule of thumb: 1 yd³ covers ~100 ft² at 3 in depth. Use the calculator for your exact bed.
