How Much Mulch for a 10x10 Area?

A 10×10 foot garden bed is exactly 100 square feet. Your target depth dictates the volume. From our experience top-dressing spring beds, 2 inches works well for a refresh. New beds need 3 inches. Exact bag counts and bulk yard totals for both depths below.

Steps

  1. Confirm bed area10 ft × 10 ft = 100 ft². For non-rectangular beds, split into rectangles and sum the areas.
  2. Pick your depth2 inches for a light refresh; 3 inches for new beds and stronger weed suppression.
  3. Calculate bags or yardsVolume = 100 ft² × depth (in) ÷ 12. At 3 in: 25 ft³ = 13 two-cubic-foot bags or ~0.93 bulk yards.

2-inch depth — refresh layer

Volume = 100 ft² × (2 ÷ 12) = 16.67 ft³.

Bagged mulch (2 ft³ per bag): 16.67 ÷ 2 = 8.3 → round up to 9 bags.

Bulk delivery: 16.67 ÷ 27 ≈ 0.62 cubic yards.

3-inch depth — new bed standard

Volume = 100 ft² × (3 ÷ 12) = 25 ft³.

Bagged mulch: 25 ÷ 2 = 12.5 → round up to 13 two-cubic-foot bags.

Bulk delivery: 25 ÷ 27 ≈ 0.93 cubic yards — just under one full yard.

Quick reference

Rule of thumb: 1 cubic yard of mulch covers about 100 ft² at 3 inches deep. A 10×10 bed at 3 inches is essentially a one-yard job.

Bags vs bulk for a 10×10 bed

At this size, bagged mulch from a home center is practical — 9 to 13 bags fit in a standard SUV. Bulk delivery makes sense if you are mulching multiple beds in the same trip or already ordering a truckload.

Compare unit cost: bulk is often cheaper per cubic foot but may carry a minimum delivery fee that erases savings on a single small bed.

Frequently asked questions

How many 2 cu ft bags for a 10x10 bed at 3 inches?
13 bags. Volume = 100 × (3 ÷ 12) = 25 ft³. Each bag holds 2 ft³, so 25 ÷ 2 = 12.5 → round up to 13 bags.
How much bulk mulch in cubic yards?
At 3-inch depth: 25 ft³ ÷ 27 = 0.93 yd³. At 2-inch depth: 16.67 ft³ ÷ 27 ≈ 0.62 yd³. Most suppliers deliver in 0.5 or 1 yd³ increments.
Is 2 inches or 3 inches better?
3 inches is the landscaper standard for new beds and weed control. Use 2 inches for annual top-dressing over existing mulch.
